Several paths within classes.

Postby marzuku » Wed Apr 22, 2009 3:19 pm

Imagine that if you had knight and sorceror as the first classes and they could chose between 4 paths of magic at higher lvl like 25.
im imagening some sort of out of link guild/Order you can join that lets you achieve a new kind of magic once you hit a certain level, and each path leads to a different type of self defence, but once the paths join in a summoning ritual of some sort a seal will be formed which can summon powerfull magics.

F.ex Seal of four paths Summons some demon to fight with you and your party or maybe increases damage at the begining of a boss fight, or maybe as Sex4cash said puts a seal on the ground where players are safe or the seal could go wrong and one of the players might die  .(you will need one player from each path to complete this ritual)

Then its just a matter of finding out what the paths will be called.

i was thinking something like Crimson, Azure , Emerald, Onyx

The Order which trains you in the different paths is called the "Guardian Order"(they were created by the gods long ago to protect Geona and serve as powerfull instruments)

(CK/S)Crimson Knight/sorceror
(AK/S)Azure Knight/sorceror
(EK/S)Emerald Knight/sorceror
(OK/S)Onyx Knight/sorceror
Crimson leyshaper? etc (you get the idea)

you would gain certain powers others could not gain and the game would be more varied and you could REALLY be an unique built character with unimaginable power.

ive always had some love for special talents for each class and almost every rpg has it, old xen only had stats making difference and gear, but with this you could become crazy and from day 1 on a character you would have to put into mind what path you would chose once you were high enough cause they each increase different things.

Just an idea!

And yeah the story behind why there were 4 paths would be because each of the guardians chose their own path in developing power.

anyway just an idea for what future high lvls could build on.

You need to keep it short, and easy to understand next time.. to be honest I didn't read anything but the "blah" Knight/sorcerer things lol

but I don't like being called a "Black Knight"

Noir/Noire (french for black.)
onyx
even shadow

but black?

What Marz was saying somewhere in the beginning (amongst all those words I skipped over) reminded me of Ragnarok Online a little bit. Whereas if you wanted to change from a Novice to a First Level class you had to go to a particular establishment. (Mage Guild, Swordsman Association, Thief Guild, Merchant Guild, etc.) Then afterwards you had two choices within the Second Level class (Thieves becoming Assassins or Rouges, Swordsmen becoming Knights or Paladins)

A little so-so on the Knight naming. I wouldn't go with Noir Knight, and Shadow Knight sounds a bit like mixing the stealth element of an Assassin with the brute or tank element of a Knight class (which I don't think we're going for, maybe a potential path though, just wondering) Onyx sounds alright because of of Knights being like strong and rock solid (tanking). Not to copy anything but a further example from RO: Swordsmen could go Knight or Paladin, Knights went Lord Knight and Paladins went Crusader.

Maybe simple class advancements would be alright. Like say the knight, he could go a tanking route (Minimizing damage) or a damage route (maximizing damage). Could be pretty interesting.

This will just make the game more "complicated".

The gamestyle should be pretty solid imo, shouldn't be any fancy upgrades from class to class.

the game wont be complicated, every mmorpg does have a talent system, this one would be easy to fix, but hard to master how to use.

i was thinking you lvled and chose talents like on D2 unlocking certain tree's etc.

Go ahead and reread what I said. I understand a tank can do both, but if you look at the BOLDED words he would be better at it. Anyways, done posting anything.

There is about five fucking retards on this board that are not worth dealing with.

it aint really the same though, chosing a path is like chosing a talent tree and staying true too its nature instead of putting some points on Crimson and Onyx or Azure you only put on one of them, and therefore become "Onyx/Crimson/Azure Knight.
But within these paths there will be like miniature talent tree's if you see what i mean?

the meaning of this talent system is to make the game more interesting cause nobody will have the same spells, your specc becomes you as a player, because maybe 1/10 Might have your talents, of course there probably will be some reset fee so you can try several paths then settle, but the main idea is making a character which belongs to you and you buildt from scratch with path and stats.
This way we really become individual players with different identities and different ways of using your abilities.

Thought of some special traits each path had.
Crimson = Rapid Regeneration (healing in battles etc while you are fighting.)
Onyx = Stoneskin (increased armor)
Azure = glacia ventus (ice breath)
Emerald = Hypnosis of animals? (using them as weapons)

anyway people would really have personal traits with this talent system/path system besides you would could probably have different quests which gained you abilities from each path so players would actually have 2 "TRain" they're character until he was imba.

im just thinking what strategic thinking players will have 2 come up with to beat people from other paths, fighting will be extremely cool.

Its a good idea but it just feels that its a bit "to much" especially with the current state of the game - still alpha.
I'd rather have something similar to Xenimus "talent" system now.
So you can customize your character into different talents. e.g: X % lifesteal / bonus dmg / reflect dmg blablabla you get my point.

Yeah.. I agree with wacoo..

The "talent" system that Xenimus has now isn't to complicated.. Well either does it even DO much, its all fairly low gains.. Nothing to drastic of a change in xenimus's talents..

Which in many cases, is a good thing.

We don't have any plans for a skill/talent system in the immediate future. Maybe we should make some. I do believe that a skill system is an important part of a game, but we might end up putting it off till post-Beta (or even post-Commercial). Since we'll be designing the class system for Beta, we'll take a look at it then.

A system like this is important to have, but mostly for the Artisan class in this game. As Joe mentioned, we hadn't made plans for it yet since everything else is so packed-in already, but we will have to design it at some point.

yeah, but would be pretty cool if maybe every 10th(?) lvl that it gets reseted so _if_ you make a mistake/change your mind and re-set the skill points.

and as I pointed out before and joe, karl has aswell - this is still to early to talk about.

I don't think it's to early to talk about.. It's just simply talking, bringing up ideas.. Hoping that Karl doesn't leave something out of the game, which I'm sure he won't with our help

I for my part am thinking a skill or talent system, not a "path" system. Now some skills would still depend on other skills, so there would still be progression, but I think it makes more sense this way. We haven't really talked about it yet, so there's no telling for sure.
