Hadn't gotten around to trying it until tonight - still get the dx error; I've installed the dx update. No go.

Have you tried installing the latest version from Microsoft? microsoft.com/directx

I had the same problem. This fixed it:

1. Download the dx update.
2. Open the .zip file and find the actual .dll that you're missing (will be in the appropriate CAB file).
3. Copy the .dll into your windows folder.

Strange that the updater doesn't know that the dll is out of date.
