3dstudio max?
milkshape?
maya?

blender is really awesome imo, and very powerful, but you said it's difficult to use (it just takes getting used to)

4mm0--you'll find that most 3d tools are fairly difficult to use. The only one that I've ever really liked is called Nendo. The trial version can't export, but you still get most of the functionality. I've heard that MilkShape has a nice learning curve, but I've never used it.

stay away from curved shapes if at all possible...they generate tons of polygons and usually aren't necessary

Wings3D.

Subdivision modeler, very simple interface (is my biggest gripe about blender).

Also, it does texturing and exports to near everything.
