I think it's so that not everybody looks the same, so you can have a false feeling of being independent, even though It doesn't really make a difference.. Just allows people to tell the difference between people..
It's pretty much necessary for a game these days to allow customization of the way you look..
Hell even Runescape has customization lol..

This is true as well. I I may have been viewing things on a slightly grander scale than I intended at the time. Customization is necessary as you said. I don't know if it would go so far as personal expression or anything, but wouldn't you wanting a green character be more about personal preference rather than solely different from the person standing next to you? If not, then forgive my misunderstanding.
