Version 2.5 (Sunday Feb. 15)

After wrestling with the server, I finally got it configured correctly so that the game is playable. That took all my time this weekend (that I wasn't doing valentine's day stuff :D) so this update only has a couple of new things. One of them is HUGELY important, though: the auto-updater has been enabled. I can push quick updates out to you as soon as I make them, so expect incremental updates this week enabling some of the features I was working toward today.

A side note: the server does NOT have your characters on it and is basically the same as last version. Once poorserver (the old one) comes back up, I *will* be restoring your characters, so don't bother leveling right now. If you want to log in and check out the lag time/responsiveness, that's pretty much what this update is for.

Not having any problems with lag or response-time. Works rather well, actually.

Hm. Maybe not quite as well as I first thought: a little more play and I'm noticing a weird effect: the game will slow down (everything seems to move in slow motion) and then snap back to speed (maybe even a little past speed before settling back to normal). Never experienced this on the other servers: instead of slowing down and snapping back, I'd just get non-responsive times in which monsters would disappear and my char wouldn't respond until connection was re-established.

Now I know that the network I'm on isn't the best, and it hasn't played well with games in the past, so I'm not certain how universal this speed problem is.

Anybody else notice anything? Just go kill some crawlers for a few minutes (say, till lvl2) and see.

This is because they had temporarily upgraded my account to see if that helped the lag problem. Apparently they're not going to keep it that way until I start paying. The lag you're noticing is the problem I originally encountered and was complaining to them about. I'm hoping to have it re-upgraded today (unfortunately, it's about double the price :/)

Yeah, no kidding.

I pushed out a release this morning that, among other things, makes alt+tab work correctly. When you start the launcher, it should automatically download for you.

The launcher works beautifully. Will it include update logs in the future so that the player may know what's changed?

When I set the game to full-screen, alt-tab will switch in and out of the window fine, but it also logs my character out of the game.
Is this as it's supposed to be?

Yes. This is so that if something pops up (ex. a virus scanner, IM, etc.) you won't die if you were in the middle of something :)

Yep. I decided not to implement that for this version though, since at this point I really have to start delegating things by how critical they are toward getting a working beta. It's not incredibly difficult, but what takes the most time is the sum of all the small things...

Understandable.

Looking forward to having characters back so I can get back to serious testing (and leveling!).

This server's been hit or miss for me. Sometimes it will connect, other times (as now) it won't.

Your own spare computer might work better.

Yeah, it sure seems like it. My server is also down right now though :/

The server I bought seems to be turning itself off at night...I've put in a request to change this but I'm getting more and more frustrated with this company...

On the plus side, I've finished implementing sound for the next update. This includes spell sounds, action sounds (get hit/die/attack), and background sounds. The only thing I have yet to add is a sound made when you're walking. I *really* want to add this before sending this update out, because (for some reason) this little thing is key to making the experience much more immersive.

Well, with the server down, now is the ideal time to implement all these little things.

This company sure sounds shitty. Not a service you'll opt to renew, I take it?

Here's what the company said:

DMEHosting.com wrote:VPS has been upgraded.

Parallels release a shotty update 2 weeks ago and has been a great cause for a lot of reboots due to the memory leaks in the patch they released. However last night they released another update to fix the problems they caused and we had to reboot again after the updates. We hope that this has fixed the issues.

So I guess it wasn't really their fault. You can try logging in again now, and the server should be up. I changed some settings to make it more responsive (using "Game XP") and it seems to work pretty well. It's definitely not perfect, but it's what I can afford for testing. I'll probably upgrade at beta.

The next "level" of VPS service is pushing $50/month. The cheapest private server (which I may have to go to) is $65/month. :/ Kinda intimidating...at least I think I have a refund check coming!
