It's not as if realism with respect to armor has ever been a part of fantasy games.
Witness the inverse relationship between the amount of clothing worn by any standard female character and the amount of protection it provides for her.
We'll call it the Law of the Chainmail Bikini.
The realistic usefulness of any given piece of equipment isn't the point: the point is to have an item that looks different in-game.
We want to be able to tell if a certain character is wearing a powerful/special/unique item, and these are both very distinctive shields.
Now on the one hand, the star is a bit extreme, but if it looks silly in-game, we'll just swap it out for another one with fewer points or thicker arms or whatever. But on the other hand, imagine what it would look like if we ever get particle effects attached to items: star-shield with glowing forcefield!
