In short, yes! 
Here's the scoop:
As I describe on the wiki Timeline page, the August release will be a closed Alpha. I don't expect to turn anyone away, but I'm going to try to keep the server load low to hunt down bugs, make sure it works on peoples' computers, get some interface feedback, make sure the installer works, etc. The server will probably wipe on a daily basis so that I can update and try new things. This stage should last less than two weeks if all goes well.
Once the game's core is stable, I will greatly expand the game content and the world size and...well...see what happens! This involves buying commercial server space and getting this thing in a more permanent home.
I don't want to get too far ahead of myself, but I've got the road planned from there too
