PostPosted: Mon May 28, 2007 4:17 pm
by Karl G.
How to Install
  1. Download the map tools ZIP file (pvmaptools_alpha0.2.zip) and the content ZIP file (xenmedia.zip)
  2. Unzip the pvmaptools_alpha0.1.zip file to a directory called "map tools"
  3. Unzip xenmedia.zip to the "map tools/Media" directory (it will be created when you unzip the first file)
  4. Say "yes" to overwrite the media.dat and maped.dat files
  5. Read the readme file for whichever program you want
  6. Run the program

Resources
  • download - The latest version of the tools (6/27)
  • Some content:
    • Copy the contents of the Xenimus folder into the /Media/ directory
    • download - Abridged version of the Xenimus media
  • download - The Microsoft SxS libraries (you only need to download this once; its resolves the "application configuration incorrect" error)
  • download - The latest DirectX

Bugs and Suggestions

5/29: fixed app error - If you were getting the error "application configuration incorrect" please re-download the tools using the above link, or download these DLL files and extract them into the same directory as the tools.
5/30: app error, again - Try installing this to fix the application configuration error
5/30: drawing bug - the editor was previously unable to draw at the same location twice in a row
5/30: brush sizes - the row of keys f through l changes the size of the brush
6/2: media folder - the media folder was set as "..\Media\" instead of "\Media\"

6/27: save/load and coords - added dialogs for saving and loading, as well as display of mouse coordinates in the title bar

It's not working for anyone.
The application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect.

Yeah, I'm trying to hunt that one down. No luck as of this morning; I just got of work though and I'm super hungry so I'm going to take care of that first, then try again to see what's causing this. ARG. Probably some stupid compiler setting...

Nenitus is right--that means you need to upgrade to the latest DirectX. I'll add the link to the resources list.

Shad:

The media folder was misplaced--re-download the tools package and it should work.

hey karl, are all old maps we made still usable for PV?

Not really...I could write a basic converter but it would be more work than just going through and copying them.

hey karl, how do you get things like dirt to be less blocky. I remember in the old version if you hit f it would change stuff like that into a more round dirt tile.

At this point, you can't do that...I could add a ground type that lets you adjust it manually, but that would be really annoying to use. Because I don't want things to be any harder to use than they have to, I am still thinking up a way to make that easier. Just make the maps "blocky" for now...I promise, that will be fixed later. It's just an aesthetics thing, though, and I want to have us be able to walk around in the world before it looks awesome.

Also--has anyone tried making a completely new skin for PV yet?

hey i wanted to know if anyone could help me with this dowloading

i downloaded the map tools but im on the part where to unzip the files

could anyone tell me how to do that and where i need to do it please?

Unzip the map tools to any directory; beneath that a "media" folder will be created. Unzip the xenmedia.zip file into that folder.

ziggman: every texture needs to be replaced. I could give you a list...but it would just be a list of every texture.
