Hey everyone,
Since I cant use animated models in this first release, what should the standard characters look like? Should they be blocks or spheres or pyramids...or does someone have a free character model perhaps?

first release, as in pre-alpha.
I have the code to use animated models, but I'm only comfortable using them for internal development. I could use Xen's models but I'd have to reference them from a download of Xenimus itself--these are most likely the content which he contracted from FlashFire designs, and although I'm not worried about EJ, FlashFire is an actual company that might pursue legal action if I use their content without paying.
Also, the animated mesh code is not very pretty right now

You could make it load "model.mdj" or whatever your model format is, and then you can swap in any model you like to use and just rename it "model.mdj".
Unless, of course, you have to specifically tailor the code to one model.

id say just go ahead and use the models. I doubt anyone is going to notice or care much, and if they do, just take it down, i doubt they will just come out and sue you right away.

See that's the thing--we can be sure EJ will notice, and he's the only one that matters. You're probably right that he won't start a lawsuit from the get-go, but I'd rather avoid that unpleasantness altogether.

I say do one of two things:
1.) Use free models (since you're not making a profit it won't go against the TOS)
2.) Use a fake blob model with the animation for the xenimus human character. The players can change the model files themselves. (As stated before)

It would be possible to use either, I'm sure.
I might actually contact EJ again with another proposal to co-license the models from both him and his original model developer...but we'll see how much that costs (and whether or not I can just use them outright if Xen is installed...after all there's nothing in the EULA preventing it, and the download is free!)
