Item disappearance

I just logged on and the majority of my items have disappeared, equipped and inventory. They carried over from the previous version number (or two back as the last was on the debug server) and survived a couple of the crashes so it hasn't just reset to before a crash but they've just vanished.

Just wondering if this is a bug, known issue from a crash or something. Not sure if I want to bother looking for new gear right now if it will be in vain.

I tried merging the new and old games together, and it got upset. I can revert to purely one or the other, but at this point people have been playing enough that I was just going to leave it as-is.

Nothing else should disappear--if it does, let me know asap so I can look in the backup, etc.
