What is the vanising point on screen?

Is it to the end of the window or is it on the sides of the screen. I have had monsters dissapear on me from time to time just for them to pop up a second later and kill me in a stealthy way.

Unless the double axed skellys can cast a hide type spell on them selfs then i can see that. But im still wondering.
